Our Little Rugby Star

So before the tournament today, we asked Charlie how many tries he was going to get today.

"Five!" he answered, confidently.

And to his credit, he got four tries.  He almost got five, but got tackled just at the try line, at the very end of one game.  And now he is the dirtiest kid I've ever seen.  The bath water will be black tonight.

I've included a fantastic tackle he did, in this video.  And clipped together the four tries...

Charlie and His Girl

They certainly have a matching dress sense....

My Son, The Sports Star

So last year, Charlie started football lessons in Term 2.  It was fun, and he learned some ball handling skills.  This year, he has been bumped up to the older age level, and has thrived in the competitive atmosphere.  When he saw how good the other boys were, he stepped up his game, and now he is playing with the higher level kids.  I overheard a couple of them talking a few weeks ago: "I want to go against Charlie [in one-on-one play];  he's GOOD."

After refusing to try rugby last year, Charlie decided (after one day at a summer camp) that he would like to play.  What a great decision.  He has been loving it.  And he is good.  Today was the first rugby tournament of the season.  His team (Cheetahs!) played three 10-minute games, and he scored two tries.  I can't get over how professional he is about the game.  Well, aside from the clownish antics before and after the serious play!

And of course, there were the two tries....

He's Growing Up

First he goes to school, then he turns 5.  I don't know if I can take anymore.

Off to School We Go!

Charlie started Year 1 this year.  I still get choked up when he goes off to his class.

The key to being able to go to school:  must be able to go to toilet on own.
Ready for his first day!

The last time they will be that shiny and un-scuffed!
Mummy, I'm too big to hold your hand going to school!

Really not sure about this 'cute bunny' pose...

His classmate is not sure about it either...
...and the need to stand out, even on DAY 1....
