Hong Kong Sevens 2011

Wow.  A three-day rugby marathon for me.  And I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Friday evening....a social affair.  USA beat Japan.  Women's rugby showed me that I am actually a total wimp.
The beginning.  Cheers!
I will not ever cross those women.
Cheers!  Again!
Cheers again!!  Jane's friend Pete is going to bite her ear off
USA!USA!USA!
The guy on the left doesn't really look angry
Jane had obviously had too much beer when she took this one
'Cuz we're not getting silly at all...
Not in the least.
Saturday....started at about 2pm....and went on til the bitter end....which was about 11pm for us old fogies.....

Oh, hey!  No more photos!  Must have been having too good of a time!

Sunday....James and I ditched the kids with Jane and went for a couple of hours.  We watched England beat Samoa to get to the finals, but missed NZ beating England, as we had to get back to the kids.  But no wonder England lost to NZ.  NZ's kit was a lot cooler.  The England team had to be mortified in their kit.  When I first saw them warming up, I didn't know it was England (as it was a strange, red and orange concoction), and asked James who the dance team was.  Then, after that game, a (real) dance team came out (along with a rubbish girl band, billed as "The First Pan-Asian Girl Band!" eek), but their kit was not nearly as colourful and dance-y as the England kit.

The real dance team, with less colourful kit (and rubbish singers!)

Shh! Daddy's Sleeping

My kids seem to think their dad sleeps constantly.

Kate drew this about a year ago.  It's on our door.

"Mummy has gone running and Daddy is still in bed"
Here's Charlie's from a week or so ago....

Me: "Nice picture Charlie, but where is Daddy?"
Charlie:  "He's inside, sleepin'."

I'm not sure what the fascination is, but this is an ongoing activity....

The (Very) Young and the Restless

So Charlie has a new fiancee...

Last year, he decided he was going to marry Lily, who was in his class.  She is the cutest little Japanese girl I have ever seen in my life (and Japanese girls tend to be cute!).  So for almost a year, he was pretty clear on the fact that he and Lily would get married, and have 6 kids.  Two older ones, that I would help to look after, and then four younger ones, that the older ones would help to look after.  Life seemed pretty simple and well-planned.

And then Rebecca moved here.  Initially, they were fast friends.  Best friends.  She is a girl who can play with cars.  They have sleepovers.  They are thisclose.

About a month ago, Rebecca told her parents she was going to marry Charlie when she grew up.  They, knowing Charlie's devotion to Lily, mentioned to her that they thought Charlie might be marrying Lily when he grew up.  Rebecca's response: "Well, he might change his mind by the time we grow up."  Wise girl.

And within a week, Charlie was telling me he was going to marry Rebecca.  Smart girl.  Don't know what she did, but it worked!

BUT.  Here's the thing.  He didn't handle Lily very well.  I know, I know, they are only 4, but he managed to act like any adult guy in this situation.  What did he do, you ask?  He completely blanked Lily.  She would be hanging out by the bus stop, and he would run past her, shouting,"Rebecca!  Rebecca!"  I was mortified.  For Lily, but also that my own son would act like that.  I had to have a chat with him about being nice, and thinking about other people's feelings.  This is really the first time I've had to have this kind of chat, because he's usually a very empathetic kind of kid.  "Gentle" is how another friend (with two boys) describes him.

And then.  Last week, Charlie told me Rebecca didn't want to marry him anymore;  she wanted him to marry Lily.  The reason:  she had decided to marry Jamie.  She is going to go far, I tell you.  She managed to 'break up' with Charlie without him even realising she broke up with him!

And two days later (my head is now spinning), Charlie told me he was, actually, going to marry Rebecca.  She had changed her mind again.

This morning, the truth came out.  Apparently Jamie, having been told by Rebecca that she was going to marry him, kept kissing her.  "He kept kissin' her, and it was 'noyin' her.  She doesn't want to be kissed until her weddin' day. [!!!!]  I'm the only one who won't kiss her til our weddin' day."

Good girl!

Clearing Out

Kate's school had a garage/boot sale (or as Kate puts it: "Junk Sale") yesterday.  I frantically spent the last couple of weeks setting aside all of our "junk" to sell, as I got a table again this year.  And somehow, our helper managed to sell almost everything, and then give away the last few things on our way out, so we didn't have to take anything back home.  After a few minutes, I kind of stood to the side of our table, and then eventually moved away from it, as she was so good at hawking everything, and getting people to come to the table to look.  She managed to give people good deals, while still making sure we got some good cash for all the stuff.  In the end, the kids now have about HKD1,000 with which to buy new toys.  Total success, all of it down to her.  (unfortunately for the German guy across the way from us, who didn't sell much, as his stuff was way overpriced and he never went down on price)

Charlie had a successful day, too.  He made two incredible goals at football (on fire, he was), and then managed to use the HKD100 he was given to spend in the garage sale, buy about 20-odd things.  He kept disappearing, and then coming back to our table with a car....and then another car....and then a couple of dinosaurs...and a walking dinosaur (the biggest spend for him - HKD40)....a game....another car....another car....In all, he ended up with about 18 cars, all of them the most unusual ones I have ever seen.  I have to say, I am really impressed with the discernment and determination of this little 4 year-old!
Still two more cars to buy!
In the afternoon, we all had a little nap.  Charlie was the last to come into the bedroom.  From the looks of it, there must not have been any more room on the bed....
