It's Done

Kate got the all-clear yesterday to swim.  Woo hoo!  Oh, wait.  Summer is over.  (although it will still be hot for a while, but that's a technicality!)

I am so impressed with how she has handled everything to do with this chicken pox palaver.

Not that there weren't moments.  There was a lot of crying, screaming, shouting...
And Kate was almost as bad.

But every time we had to go to the doctor's office to change her dressings, she went.  When they called her into the treatment room, she went.  It was only when she was actually on the little bed/table that she would ever lose it.  If it had been me in that situation, at the same age, my mother would have had to crate me in a pet cage to get me to go to the doctor's after the first time.

And when the last wound would not heal up due to granulation, she (screamingly) let the doctor, and then me, apply silver nitrate to her wound, knowing it would be stingingly painful.  All she required was her little bunny in her hand and her thumb in her mouth.

After all the doctor appointments, and the surgery, and more doctor appointments, and the wounds healing....she has not been self-conscious of the many large and scary-looking scars that pepper her body.  It is only me who has to hold back the tears every time I look at her and think of all she has been through with those, and hope that they fade soon so she doesn't have to be constantly reminded of this ordeal.  It has not affected her confidence - she remains one of the little ringleaders of her class (which I see when I peek to see her during her playtimes at school!).

And so today she swam with her class.  And had a blast.
