So Kate has a bit of homework now. She always has a home reader, but now she has writing work.
So we spend time after bathtime and before bedtime, doing this homework and sometimes another activity book, and then we do her reading and then I read to them before bedtime. The whole thing takes about an hour, so there is no TV before bed anymore. Poor kids. But they don't seem to mind. They are enjoying the extra reading (it helps to be a librarian! books galore come home every week), and they are really proud of the work they are doing, and how quickly they are improving.
This is her newest activity book (that she chose). It's actually quite hard work - there is a long passage and then some reading comprehension questions that she must read and then write out answers for. Fortunately, they are all parts of the Disney Princess stories, so 1) she is interested and 2) she knows the story lines and only really needs to focus on a few details. But it takes at least 1/2 hour (and the other night she spent over an hour on it - bad Mummy!) to read all of it.
Charlie spends the time doing his own activity books. Mostly it's tracing lines, but this one was tracing letters. He did a fantastic job (at just under 3 1/2!) and finished the whole book (as Kate was reading her really, really long Princess story).
