If You Love It, Let It Go

Kate tried to catch a sparrow that was on our balcony.

I'm sure it was pretty tempted.  Inside was a little cloth and a pen lid for a pillow.

Rugby 7's

So James' new idea is that Charlie can play rugby and get a junior membership at the football club!

Charlie is up for it - when we went to the Sevens, he wanted to jump down onto the field and play.  He wants to tackle everyone.

And after some KFC and candy floss...

Then he woke up and had James' courderoy marks on his face...

The night before, we went to the night party...
I was heading to the toilets and saw a guy that looked really familiar.  I kind of gave him that look and he looked at me and said,"Yeah, hey! How are you?"  And I said,"Where do I know you from?"  And he said,"Boy, you were really a mess when I saw you!  I guess you made it home ok."  And I said,"Where was that?"  And he faffed and I realised he was messing with me.  Pretty impressive though.  Had me going for about 5 minutes!

So later when we were heading out, we passed him and his friend.  I said to James and our friend,"Hey, guys, have you met my friend Toby?" And he got all embarassed.  But we chatted to him and his friend and they were funny, so we took a picture with our new friends.

But they were nothing compared to the guys in the South Stand the following day.
We even saw the gingerbread man from Shrek, leading everyone in a dance.

What the...?

Charlie likes to make me laugh.  Unintentionally, of course.

One expression he likes is,"What the Hank?"
Not sure how it morphed into that.

He is colouring some paper plates right now.  He's made three pictures for his teacher, Miss Sholan, who he looooves.  He has said he is going to marry Kate, Lily and Miss Sholan.  Lily is his girlfriend.  She is about as adorable as they come.  He is devoted to her, and she thinks he's so nice.  He hugs her and kisses her whenever he sees her.

I just asked him if he was going to make a plate for Miss Theresa, his other teacher.
"Nope."
"Why not??!?!"
"Because she has not got long hair."

Ah.

The Greatest Show On Earth

Kate's Year 1 Show was on Thursday.  The theme: The Past.  Kate's class was to dress up as the 70's.  I thought that was fantastic, as that's my favourite decade (because I was born in it?) as far as music and clothes go.

Kate got so into the singing and dancing that we are signing her up for one of those singingdancingacting classes.  It should be great fun.  And good for her confidence (because she is such a wallflower!).

Flowers

It's a dead heat.

We buy flowers every week, and Kate wanted to pick them a last week.  So I let her.

Then Charlie decided he had to have a turn, so this week he picked.

I can't decide who has the better colour sense!

Magnum, PI

All we need is a little 'stache

Look Ma, No Hands!

Kate has finally learned to ride her bike without stabilisers.  After about a year of fear, we finally pinned her down to a day, and we took them off.  It was hard going, and semi-successful (with matching bad backs for James and myself, from holding onto the back of the bike!).  The next day, I lowered her seat so she could stand if she needed to.  SUCCESS!  Now she is practically doing BMX stunts.

Charlie still needs to sort out pedaling and moving his feet all the way around!

Yum Yum!

Last week Kate went to a birthday party...I so need to learn how to do this:

Nothin' Doin'

"Charlie, what did you do in school today?"

"Uhhh, I not a luncher."

"Did you learn any letters or numbers?"

"No."  (he does)

"What did you do then?"

"Uhhh, I play, and I not a luncher.  And I had a snack.  And I went to the toilet so I can have a wee."

"What else did you do?"

"Not anything more."

"Nothing?"

"I did not do any more things."

Lucky Little Chap

This morning, Charlie was looking for his day-of-the-week socks.  He asked,"What day is it today?" and I said,"Tuesday, with a T!"

Off he went.

He came running back with some socks that said......TUESDAY.

Then Kate was showing him her little watch and said,"What time is it, Charlie?"

And he said,"Eight!"

And sure enough, it was.

Another Irrelevance

This morning Charlie said,"Poo is yuck to eat."

I said, "Yes, it is, you should never eat it."

"But sausages are yummy to eat."

Irrelevance

There was a Year 2 class in the library today.  The teacher was reading a book to them about insects (Why Do Some Insects Glow?).  She asked the students if they had seen any interesting insects.  A few said,"I've seen a ladybird!" "I've seen a beetle!" "I've seen a praying mantis!"

Then one girl raises her hand.

The  teacher says,"Yes, E___?"

And she says,"Yesterday I got two mosquito bites, and once I saw a dog running with only three legs."

Teacher: "Oh, really, E____!"

They do earn their keep.

Homework

So Kate has a bit of homework now.  She always has a home reader, but now she has writing work.

So we spend time after bathtime and before bedtime, doing this homework and sometimes another activity book, and then we do her reading and then I read to them before bedtime.  The whole thing takes about an hour, so there is no TV before bed anymore.  Poor kids.  But they don't seem to mind.  They are enjoying the extra reading (it helps to be a librarian!  books galore come home every week), and they are really proud of the work they are doing, and how quickly they are improving.

This is her newest activity book (that she chose).  It's actually quite hard work - there is a long passage and then some reading comprehension questions that she must read and then write out answers for.  Fortunately, they are all parts of the Disney Princess stories, so 1) she is interested and 2) she knows the story lines and only really needs to focus on a few details.  But it takes at least 1/2 hour (and the other night she spent over an hour on it - bad Mummy!) to read all of it.

Charlie spends the time doing his own activity books.  Mostly it's tracing lines, but this one was tracing letters.  He did a fantastic job (at just under 3 1/2!) and finished the whole book (as Kate was reading her really, really long Princess story).

The Long Run

I did it.

Months and months of preparation.  Hours and hours and hours of running.

And finally

5 hours and 15 minutes.

The day was hot (27 degrees), humid (95%) and sunny.  The run was fine (3 hours 30 minutes for the first 30K) until we emerged from the Western Tunnel for the last 8K.  For one, there were about two cups of water for the remaining runners, for 5K.  Secondly, that was where all the ups and downs started, where you go over all the overpasses in Central.  Oh. My. God.  Eventually I had to just walk up them and jog down.  At the 41K sign I perked up - 1.295K to go!  And then I rounded a corner to see.......another up ramp.  Aaaaagh!  When I finally got to the finish I was about to burst into tears.  But I remembered my photo was going to be taken, so I smiled big!

Here's me at the start (clueless, and hopeful of a sub-5 hour result)

Bangkok

For Chinese New Year,

we headed to my cousin Oat's house in Bangkok.  He is always so generous and hospitable, having us to stay every time we go.  I like to use the kids' cuteness to incentivise him.

This time we flew business class, as all the normal tickets were sold out (Chinese New Year and all).  I think the kids are just a little bit too used to this life of luxury.  Charlie ate everything on offer, including the (very adult) cheese plate.

James has a membership at the RAC in England, which allows him to use reciprocal clubs around the world.  So we took advantage of that and went to the Royal Bangkok Sports Club a couple of times.

and I had forgotten about it, but they have Fanta Red in Thailand, which they don't have anywhere else, to my knowledge.  The kids discovered something miraculous about Fanta Red....

One day, we met up with Kate's friend from school, who was also holidaying in Bangkok.  We went to the aquarium and it was brilliant, as usual.  This time we did everything - the glass-bottomed boat, the little fishies that eat the dead skin off your feet and the popcorn and soda (we ate the popcorn, not the fishies)!

My cousin Klang took us to Ayudhaya for the famous seafood.  The flame-grilled tiger prawns are to die for.  Here they are before we ate them:

We also got to visit with almost all of the family (6 days is really not enough!).  The newer cousins,
the younger cousins,
we celebrated my cousin Klang's birthday...
...and we hit a few late evening venues.  The latest hit in Bangkok is going to a bar that is on top of a building.  We went to two, and the views were fabulous.

Scirocco

and Red

Very windy, though.  I thought we were going to get blown off the building at Scirocco.

All in all, a wonderful trip.

Birthday Girl

Wow.  I can't believe she is 6.  How time flies.  She is such a little teenager, it's unbelievable.

Year 5 was tough one.  A lot of emotions, a lot of out-of-control-ness.  She is really trying to improve, and we've had a few days of pretty much perfection.  Touch wood!  On the other hand, she is the most mature 6-year old I've ever met, and I have met quite a few recently!  So I guess I can't have everything - it takes a lot of energy to be mature and grown-up (don't I know it!), so she needs to let it out sometime...and I'm glad she can let it out with me and not other people!

How grown up does she look here....
Charlie helping her open her gifts...

Charlie acting as guinea pig for Kate's new make-up....

The funny thing is, Kate got one of those doll-head things for her birthday that you can style hair and do make-up for.  I guess the live version is better, but we could have saved money if I'd known!
