So I've been taking Cantonese lessons for the past month-ish. I've still got about a month of lessons to go, but I will be taking a break for our holiday.
The number one reason for my taking Cantonese (at this point) is to be able to dress down a taxi driver for (ostensibly) not knowing where I would like to go. Yeah, it's been handy and fun to be able to practise with the hawkers in the wet market. And, yeah, it's been fun to impress HK natives with my newfound skills. But I will consider my language goals to be reached when I can easily, clearly and fluently shout to a taxi driver:
"How long have you been a taxi driver in HK?!? Why do you not know where [insert name of any common, Central street here] is?!?! How can you be a taxi driver, picking up what must be your thousandth fare who needs to go to [street name] and still not have a f***ing clue where it is?!?!?! It's not like there are millions of streets in central HK!!! Take me to f***ing [street] now, you bozo!!!"
Once I have mastered this, more lessons will be unnecessary.
